I was browsing through kennysia's blog's archive when I came across a topic he wrote about translations from English to Malay language. There are so many funny comments on that entry that I can't help not repeating it here.

Home Alone 3 = Keseorangan Di Rumah 3
Cheaper By The Dozen = Lelong Dua Belas
101 Dalmatians = 101 Bintik
The Day After Tomorrow = Lusa

Joy Stick = Kayu Gembira
Plug and Play = Cucuk dan Main

And the most funniest one is taken from a scene in Black Hawk Down, a war movie which hubby and I luurve, when the commander shouted "Everybody duck!".. the translation says "Semua orang itik!"

That cracked me up crazy.

Since I'm on this topic, I shall say that saying "I love you" sounds better in English than "Aku cinta padamu". In Malay, it just sounds so, so, so, kental! Heh.

Another thing. What do you say in Malay if you wanna say "Make love to me..."???!!

  • Daddy says "make love to me" is "sudikah dinda melakukan perhubungan kelamin dengan kanda?"

    Errr .... riiiigghhhhttt ....

  • ajab booboo!!! Your malay version very geli-geleman!!! Apa dah kelamin? Haruskah anda menggunakan perkataan kelamin di dalam ayat tersebut? Sungguh kental!!! AHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!

Which reminds me, when mat nak sound minah, dia kata "you nak jadi steady i tak?" MAK!!! kental habis!!! *pengsan*

  • Oh my gawd! Kelamin? Kental kodok!

Eh Kak Lynn, macam gini kot...

    "Buat cinta kepadaku"

    Wahahaha!

I disagree that Malay language is unromantic when it comes to love. When you translate directly, yes it's so kental-sound. Bahasa Melayu pasar, mana sama kan. But there're not many of us who did take Sastera Melayu back in school. Bahasa Melayu halus lah katakan. Only those who are "arif and fasih" are able to write something as delicate as what we can't translate.
